Once again there are small changes. Roll of Honour is re-located to inside of front- and back-covers and Asia-Pacific championship events are now reviewed in same detail as full WRC and F2-only events.

World rally cars

The new concept of World Rally Car is explored with an interview of David Lapworth, Subaru Rally Team chief engineer. First the background and the philosophy behind the concept is explained in detail and then the homologation process and differences to the convetional Group A cars is gone through. Finally, odd questions are examined, like will there be exceptions or effect on privateers.

The return of the finns

With Tommi Makinen's championship, Finnish drivers return to the limelight. Interview with Timo Jouhki, Tommi's manager, reveals interesting points about finnish character and culture, before moving on to history with Tommi and also talks about other Finnish drivers.

Active revolution

With strict restrictions on engines and limitations of the basic bodyshell, the transmission remains an area where performance gains can be sought from. An article that apparently is based on interview with FFD-Ricardo personnel goes through various aspects of active differential technology. There are numerous small sidebars, from explaining how this technology affects F2 cars or roles of the three differentials in a 4WD car.

Under the bonnet 1996

A two-page feature on engine bays of four top rally cars of 1996, similar to that of cockpits in the 1995 edition. Included cars are the same (Ford Escort RS Cosworth, Mitsubishi Lancer Evo III, Subaru Impreza 555 and Toyota Celica ST205) as is the concept of having a photo and a diagram of each with explanation of various components seen.

The end of an era

Holmes makes a premature conclusion that with World Rally Car regulations the old Group A is dead. Article looks at the era of Group A cars, sheds light on historical background, listing some most important rule changes and covers challenges that governers of the sport have faced. In final chapter titled Highlights of the Group A Era some interesting statistics of from 1987-1996 period are listed.
