Doug Woods
decoration
Doug got interested in of rallying at a relatively late stage. While studying at university in 1965 he noticed a poster for a local navigational rally and entered that with his friend in a very unlikely rally car, a Studebaker Lark. They had only a very vague idea of what was to be expected but it turned out to be a memorable adventure which got Doug hooked for life. From the very start Woods became co-driver and he tried his hand in driving only in autocross and driving tests but never in a stage rally. Over the following few years, Doug gained experience by competing in club, regional and national events culminating to his first Canadian Championship rally win in 1968.

From 1969 Doug began co-driving with Walter Boyce in a partnership that saw them win five Canadian national championship titles from 1970 through 1974. On top of that their single biggest success was winning 1973 Press-on-Regardless WRC rally. Besides successful national campaigns with Boyce, Doug also had several outings with Bob Hourihan. This period is important because it brought both Bob and Doug to Europe where they contested smaller events like the Circuit of Donegal and the Scottish Rally but also the 1000 Lakes Rally in 1973, one of only three WRC rallies that Woods took part in as a competitor.

Reading that carefully reveals that Doug indeed has had his hand in WRC in a role of non-competitor too. He was Rallymaster (the Canadian name for Clerk of the Course) for Rally of Rideau Lakes which was a WRC event in 1974 and has been organizing local and national events in Canada after that too. At the time of writing (June 2007), he is a Steward in the Canadian Rally Championship and member of national rally rules committee. However, rallying is only a hobby, Doug Woods is trained engineer and for living he works as Program Manager in the defense industry.

Written with kind help of Doug himself.
