To be precise, at the time this car was called Mitsubishi Lancer RS because name Evolution was adopted only after decision about second evolution was made by mid-season.
With Lancer, Mitsubishi did exactly what Subaru would later do with Impreza, moved from big and bulky Galant to a smaller and nimbler car. However - unlike Subaru - Mitsubishi did not commit with full heart as they viewed Paris-Dakar and Pajero equally, if not more important than the WRC, thus dividing company's engineering resources and budget between the two projects.
Lancer had smaller bodyframe mated to same engine used in Galant and sported multilink suspension at rear.
