Mario Fornaris' vision of gradually re-building Mitsubishi's success in rallying, starting from simple design and improving that with more complex parts later ended with Lancer WRC05. Not only was he himself sacked in mid-season but Mitsubishi called it a day and withdrew from the sport, even after marked improvement over previous version.
WRC05 was 30mm wider, as allowed by the rules, but also feature active differentials plus new engine components like waste gate and anti-lag valves. Besides introducing active differentials, automatic clutch and paddle-type gearshifting were used, too. Also rear suspension has been re-designed, along with new rear bumper.
