As with most other young finnish rally drivers, Janne sat behind steering wheel of a rally car at the age of 18 after having received drivers license. Of course he had driven cars in closed areas like frozen lakes even before that but first rally came about in 1993.
Compared to some others, Janne is very hands-on type and knows cars and technology very well. He is also deceivingly easy-going, hailing from sparsely populated Lapland and possessing laconic way of speech typical to the region.
Unique qualities do not end there, however. While his first rally car, Group F rear-wheel driven Toyota Starlet was quite common choice at that stage, the next year boy got his hands on Group A Lancia Delta Integrale. For such a young driver that was a big step. Tuohino however had plenty of talent and loads of experience, having acquired plenty of mileage in Ford Escort he had owned with his friend, most of it against clock.
Young man was admitted into selected group of few when he began training in coaching group for young drivers, ran by Finnish motorsport association. As usual, cars came and went, ranging from various FWD cars like Opel or VW to 4WD Mitsubishi Lancer. In Rally Finland 1999 he for a first time drove with World Rally Car and finished incredible eight. Same year he won finnish national title in Group N and two years later he became Group A national champion.
