WRC3 was thought to be an intermediate model between WRC2 and new, facelifted Accent for 2004. There is little new and nothing radical in WRC3, main differences being yet more suspension travel, modifications to hydraulic power steering, cooling improvements and new dampers.
Perhaps biggest single difference from previous models is that with WRC3 MSD moved engine development from Mountune to in-house. Engine internals included new pistons, combustion chamber redesigned and various parts had been lightened. According to Graham Moore who was appointed as chief engineer after Nick Clipson left, the MSD prepared engines are recognised from orange engine block.
Since introduction of WRC3 HWRT had difficult times as budget shrunk. Castrol did not renew sponsorship contract for 2003 and team had to restrict development and testing. This reflected badly on results.
