This rally was the first mixed-surface event since 1996 San Remo. Even though rules allowed use of full tarmac spec car and tarmac tyres, both top teams Citroen and Ford jointly agreed to use only gravel tyres and mainly gravel set-up, though with much lower ride-height. This was done for budget reasons.

Sebastien Loeb scored his 50th win on a first mixed-surface event in 13 years. Here he is seen driving on Friday's tarmac stages, using gravel tyres but with lower ride-height.
Having built a good lead in Friday, Sebastien was able to take it easier for the next two days, especially in tricky places where overnight rain turned road very muddy.
