With 23 entries, Monte Carlo 1997 is true miniature WRC rally. This was because rally was in practice divided into professionals (those 23 brave souls) and amateurs. Professionals did not need to complete the concentration run but amateurs were free to service anywhere and did complete only first 17 stages. In amateurs class there were 110 entrants.
Double rally and end of concentration run were not the only curiosities. For a first since 1960's rally included a special stage withing principality itself. Run as SS1/18, the stage coursed the route around Monaco harbour familiar from F1 races.
