Only 40 stages were run. 11 stages in and around Sault Ste. Marie were cancelled due to adverse road conditions.

Rally leader at the finish was Markku Alen, but as penalty points were assessed only then, he dropped to second. Most penalties were due to speeding of Fiat and Lancia service crews against explicit regulations set by the organisers.
