Rallycourse 2005
decoration
To my immense relief I discovered that apparently others shared my view on how disappointing 2004 Rallycourse was. For 2005 edition, publisher changed as CMG bought the series and David Williams returned as editor. That is, until his untimely death, upon which Jerry Williams was called upon to take the reins. Not a simple task, given size of David's boots.

Besides the change of the publisher and two changes of editor, other contributors changed too. Long-time Rallycourse contributors like Michel Lizin, Paul Haines and David Evans made a return. If much changed, something stayed the way it was as photography is still McKlein and technical reviews are still written by Martin Sharp.

Book also corrected the mistake of 2004 edition where increase in WRC calendar was not reflected in the allotted space in pages as book is now thicker at 192 pages. This gave more room for articles and there are lots of those. A bit too much, if likes of Matthew Wilson or Dakar Rally get one each. On the other hand, coverage of candidate events is very good idea.

Review of the Year

Jerry Williams reviews the tragic year.

Profile: Sebastien Loeb

Michel Lizin paints a charismatic picture of the very likeable Loeb, A sidebar has some statistics, now partly outdated.

Top Ten Drivers

Michel Lizin's standard feature.

Adventure: Dakar Rally

David Williams' article on Dakar.

Interview: Gigi Galli
Anthony Peacock talks with Galli, a boy from small Italian village and Mitsubishi works driver. Starting off from his early career, fast forwarding to present day and Mitsubishi contract - on which majority of the article is spent. Sidebar talks about Gigi and co-driver Guido d'Amore.

Profile: Matthew Wilson

Jerry Williams speaks with Malcolm's son, who at the time had just had a big accident from which he was recovering. Latter half of the article is spent on Matthew's plans and future.

Interview: Armin Schwarz

Jerry Williams interviews Schwarz on the eve of his retirement, touching several topics. Starting off from rules which, according to Armin, are changed too often and thoughts of retirement that he had after Hyundai. Wild days at Toyota in early 90's and less hectic days at Skoda are all visited as well.

Technical Review

Technical review and Martin Sharp, this time starting off with new dimensional rules (max width increased to 1800mm), moving on to the only new car of the season, Suzuki Swift S1600. Ford's new 2006 did debut only after book went to press but gets some attention as well. Some thought is spent wondering about Martin's problems of getting heard at Peugeot and how the team eventually changed shock absorbers. A topic which is discussed in length for other teams as well for the rest of the article.

Insight: Rally Car Safety

Martin Sharp continues but under another topic which often spoken of but rarely at such depth. Prompted by death of Michael Park, safety and impact survivability are the issues tackled. New designs that are under study or already been proposed are also discussed.

Insight: Youth vs Experience

Should I hire a young and ambitious driver that is eager to prove himself and malleable but prone to accidents and hazard to a steady stream of scored points? Or should I take a more experienced and proven driver who would be able to help the team but would also cost more and might not be around for many years more? These are some of the questions team managers think and David Evans writes about.

Obituaries

A sad year with Michael Park, David Williams, Richard Burns, Steve Fellows and Ryuichiro Kuze all getting six pages of remembering.
