Visually Evo IV looks quite different from previous three evolutions. Partly this is because base version was face-lifted but as with any competition model, most of the changes were intended to help performance of the rally car like bigger though still fixed rear-wing and revised front bumper with fixed light mountings.
Engine was updated and at least on paper more power and especially torque was obtained. Changes included lighter pistons, cam changes, secondary air induction and turbocharger was upgraded to twin-scroll design. Engine was rotated 180 degrees so that power was extracted from right side, which allowed less and simpler gears between engine and gearbox. Curiously enough cylinder head is in same position as previously so that exhaust remains in front of the engine.
Car also sported new Xtrac sequential gearbox for a first time. Rear suspension was completely new with independent multi-link with coil spring.
