In 1978, two drivers stood from the crowd. Though both Alen and Nicolas were factory employed drivers but both scored wins in other marques too, Nicolas even in a privately entered Porsche. Both men won three events and finished on podium more often than any other drivers.

Fiat's dominancy is apparent from both win and podium statistics. Five wins out of 11 events and over one-third of the available podium places is convincing result. Nearest rival Ford scored seven podiums and 1-2-3 of RAC Rally accounts almost half of that figure, at the time when Fiat already had the title and little interest on remaining events.
