If judged by wins, Tommi deserved the title as he was the only driver to win more than three rallies. Makinen won also more stages than anyone else though Burns came close second.

Sainz, Auriol and Makinen all finished on podium on at least half of the events they started. It is interesting to note that despite wins were 4-1 in Tommi's favour, Auriol kept his own title hopes alive with string of strong points finishes.

If forementioned title candidates finished more often than they retired, Colin McRae had disastrous season. Yes, he won twice but besides that finished only once in points and retired, withdrew or was excluded eleven times. Out of which whopping eight times in a row.

Burns was runner-up in championship, won most stages after Makinen and led rallies for more stages than anyone else. Inspiring performance.
