Timo Salonen became second driver to win five rallies in one season and first driver ever to win four rallies in succession. Juha Kankkunen became first driver to win Safari on first attempt.

Salonen won five times, finished on podium eight times and retired only twice. On the other end of scale was his team-mate Vatanen who retired five times, last one being the near-fatal accident in Argentina.

But speed too, Salonen won more stages and led rallies for more stages than anybody else. Interestingly, Audi was quite close to Peugeot in terms of stage wins but led only for half as many stages as Peugeot.

Surprisingly it was 1000 Lakes Rally which had most entries this year. Partly this was because running of the Monte Carlo, the regular topper in this category, was in doubt before season got underway.
